What "water blaster" means in Australia

Across Australia and New Zealand, "water blaster" is often used interchangeably with "pressure washer", covering everything from a hose-powered nozzle attachment through to a petrol-driven commercial unit. Because the term is so broad, it pays to be specific about what type you actually need before buying, since the three categories differ enormously in price, power, weight and setup.

Hose-powered nozzle

A hose-powered nozzle screws onto your existing garden hose and uses your tap's own pressure, concentrated through the nozzle design, to produce a stronger stream — no motor, no power point, no fuel. It's the lightest, cheapest and simplest option, ideal for regular maintenance cleaning, but it won't match the raw PSI of a pump-driven machine.

Electric blaster

An electric pressure washer uses a pump to generate significantly higher pressure than mains water alone, needs a nearby power point and extension lead, and is heavier and bulkier to store and move around. Petrol blaster

Petrol units offer the highest available pressure and no power lead requirement, making them suited to trade and heavy-duty use, but they're noisy, need fuel and maintenance, and are the most expensive and heaviest to store and transport. For most households, this is more machine than the job requires.
